Beijing will set aside thousands of hospital beds for emergency use during next year's Olympic Games in case of outbreaks of infectious diseases.
By the time the Games begin in August 2008, the city would have 6,350 beds and 144 hospitals equipped to diagnose and treat infectious diseases like bird flu and SARS.

Watts Winery announced plans this week to sell 1,700 cases of wine to China a likely first among the area's boutique wine operations.
Owner Craig Watts, a third generation Lodi grape grower, said he hopes the pending sale will boost his relatively-new wine brand and perhaps put Lodi on the map in the Far East.
Desperate times call for desperate measures, noting vineyards like his and many others must find creative ways to raise revenue in a competitive industry.
The Watts family has been growing grapes for four generations and started their winery in 1999.
"I'm not afraid to take the chance especially when we're up against the wall like we are."
He noted that the glut of grapes produced during the past five years or so has hurt wine prices.

Beijing Med-Pharm Corporation has made another acquisition that extends its pharmaceutical distribution network in China. Beijing Med-Pharm was the winning bidder for a 63% stake in Shanghai Rongheng Pharmaceutical Co., which distributes pharmaceuticals in Shanghai, China’s largest city, with 17 million inhabitants.
Beijing Med-Pharm, based in Pennsylvania, is in the business of distributing western drugs in China. It produced $21 million in revenue in the preceding 12 months.
In January, Beijing Med-Pharm formed a joint venture with Alliance Boots, a pharmacy/distributor in the UK, to buy Guangzhou Pharma, the third largest pharmaceutical wholesaler in China, which operates in Guangzhou province. As its name implies, Beijing Med-Pharma’s original distribution operations are in Beijing. The company’s stated goal is to expand its network to cover the entire country.
